Resumen

The main aim of the Inquiry Based Science Education Program (IBSE) is to contribute to the change and innovation in the learning and teaching of science, by means of a research-based approach that is expected to contribute to capacity building and to have an impact on policy definition. This paper describes the genesis, principal characteristics and evolution of the Program focusing mainly on the professional development principles and strategies as well as on the model aimed at producing changes in the educational system.
