The following article is a review of the literature on nurse prescribing on the draft Decree-Law 725, in Chile. Its aim was to review the literature in the last five years that is related to the prescription of drugs in nursing. Methodology: We searched Six databases (PubMed, Web of Science, LILACS, ProQuest Nursing & Allied Health Source, Google Scholar and Scielo) including scientific papers from 2005 to 2012. Keywords were used prescription, nursing, nurse, prescription, nurse prescribing. The criteria for inclusion of articles were those published in journals with editorial committee considered the full-text article, Spanish, English and / or Portuguese. Results: there are severa/ proposed regarding how the nurse may prescribe a limited list of drugs and other services that people need. Conclusion: we need specialty programs (master's degree and / or specialist) for certifying the skills and generate a limited list of drugs and other medical prescriptions that can be administered by nurses so independent or collaborative (in association with the medical team), in order to deliver better care to people through promotion, prevention and health recovery.
