Summary

This article reviews the writings and historiography on the so-called "social question" and the origins of social Catholicism in Chile from 1880 to 1920, and covers the relevant literature on these subjects up to 1990. The authors and other contributions are quoted and evaluated in their receptive historical contexts which condition their historiographical perspectives. Topics which require further research are identified.
